Nichols Concave | Harvesting, Home grown feed preservation, Ensiling | Kelvin Cave LtdNichols Concaves, part of Kelvin Cave Ltd, are leading specialists in improving combine efficiency and performance through the retro-fitting of a key component – the concave itself.

Nichols Concaves, which can be fitted to most popular makes and models of combine, are built to share the same centre of arc as the drum and therefore lie parallel to the drum from front to back. This allows the gap between them to be set wider and the drum run slower. The result is less straw damage with more grain being collected on the grain pan, faster harvesting and reduced power and fuel requirements.

Originally developed in Australia to withstand the most arduous working conditions, Nichols Concaves are now in service worldwide, delivering consistent reliability in all climates and operating conditions.

In the UK, and throughout the Northern Hemisphere, where straw crops are heavy and often harvested in less than ideal conditions, or in the case of grain destined for crimping, contain a high moisture content, it is vital to keep straw damage to a minimum to maximise grain separation in the concave/drum area. Also, any remaining grain carried over onto the straw walker/rotor area is more likely to be shaken out because the straw is longer and less compacted.

Nichols Concaves improve grain separation thanks to the increased useable threshing area. They are up to ten times stronger than concaves fitted by combine manufacturers because they are built from armour-grade steel. This additional rigidity minimises flexing and maintains a uniform clearance between the harvester drum and the concave reducing the likelihood of stone damage and costly repairs and downtime.

As threshing takes place over a wider area, the drum speed can be reduced and wider settings used to help protect the grain and straw.

This leads to a smoother and gentler thresh and a reduced percentage of grains within the straw.
