Red alert for silage quality

Posted by on 8 May 2012 | 0 Comments

Silage makers need to be aware of the impact that the continuing unsettled weather, the cold wet April, and subsequent poor ground conditions are likely to have on first-cut silage quality, says Dr. David Davies of Silage Solutions Ltd.

There is now a new approach to protecting your silage, with the UK launch of Safesil™, only available from Kelvin Cave Ltd.

Developed in conjunction with SLU, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Safesil uses only human food-grade ingredients that are proven to be effective against unwanted bacteria, such as Clostridia and Enterobacteria, providing a good environment for lactic acid bacteria to achieve a rapid reduction in pH, and eliminating the risk of butyric acid production which lowers the nutritional value and palatability of silage. Also very effective at killing yeasts and moulds, Safesil ensures extraordinary aerobic stability at the silage face and during feedout.

“Bruiser” boosts output

Posted by on 22 November 2011 | 0 Comments

Farmers and contractors can boost output of traditional flat-rolled flaked grain with these new Kelvin Cave heavy-duty roller mills.  Available in two sizes providing an output of 20 – 40 tonnes per hour, these British designed and built machines can process all cereal grains and pulses with up to 25% moisture content.

The Bruiser 1000 can process 20 – 30 tonnes per hour, whilst the larger Bruiser 1250 can process up to 40 tonnes per hour.  Both machines can be equipped with grain preservative applicators and an on board digital weighing system.

To achieve its high output the Bruiser 1250 incorporates two 600mm diameter 858 kg rollers requiring a minimum 120 hp to operate.  Mounted on a robust trailer chassis, both models feature magnetic protection to remove ferrous debris from grain.

Prices start from £20,000

KC SilaPactor enters the UK

Posted by on 30 August 2011 | 0 Comments

Launched in time for maize and “last cut” silage farmers, the KC SilaPactor is the latest product from Kelvin Cave Ltd to help farmers and contractors improve clamp silage quality.

The KC SilaPactor, at 3m wide and weighing 4,000kg with 11 individual roller rings, can increase dry matter compaction density by up to 40% when compared to conventional tractor rolling.  This increases the forage value retained and means less time and fuel needed to compact a clamp.

The innovative KC SilaPactor complements the Kelvin Cave range by improving dry matter retention and aerobic stability at feed out.  Farmers in the UK are currently achieving a typical density of 180kg of dry matter per cubic metre, whereas their counterparts in some European countries are achieving densities of up to 320kg of dry matter per cubic metre by using this equipment.

These compaction improvements, which result in higher nutrient retention, better fermentation and utilisation of clamp space and lower fuel consumption, can produce a considerable saving in overall feed costs.

The KC SilaPactor is available from £6,750
